Sonic Gems makes up for most of the deficiencies of the Sonic Mega Collection by adding Sonic CD (the main attraction here) in addition to the Saturn racer, Sonic R, and the arcade rarity, Sonic the Fighters (previously unreleased on a home console). With the emulation spot-on, I’ve been more than pleased with the results. If you’ve experienced many of the commercial attempts at emulating Sega Genesis games in the past, you can appreciate some of the high-quality emulation demonstrated in this package, particularly in the sound department. It does however, have a wealth of extras such as Sonic Comics, Illustrations, & various Video Clips
The only disappointment is the lackluster interface when compared to Sonic Jam on the Saturn.
Sonic Mega Collection is a top-notch Sonic anthology with plenty to keep you busy. However, most of the good stuff was on the Genesis, so there isn’t much to complain about. Unfortunately, this collection only includes the vanilla Genesis games as opposed to its successors on the Sega CD, 32X, and Saturn. If you are an old-school Sonic fan and want a way to play the collection on newer hardware, the Sonic Mega Collection is the way to go. In fact, picking up one of these retail packs will be much more cost effective than picking out just a few Virtual Console games on the Wii. With classic game compilations you can easily get a solid collection of retro games without spending a lot of cash. So is it so bad to want to be able to play a bunch of old games on your new hardware? Of course not. You can’t help but admit you like the benefits of newer consoles: wireless controllers, better video connections, faster load times. Play Mean Bean Machine 30 times and Flicky will be unlocked.The Nintendo Gamecube Retro Compilation Library Play Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 3D Blast 20 times each, exit to the title screen and then go back into the game select screen and Blue Sphere will now be unlocked. Also, instead of displaying the time elapsed, it displays the number of sprites currently on the screen.įrom the main screen, select Options. Note that sprite selection is different from Zone to Zone. To select a different sprite, press A, and to place it on the screen, press C. To start debugging, press B, then you can select any sprite in that level and put it on the screen. To enter Debug Mode, play these sounds from the level select screen: 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4. Hints are available under the options menu. Keep each game open for three hours to unlock hints. Change objects with the B button, and copy and object with the X button. Holding X when selecting a level swaps objects from the level with the A button. In level select, choose any level while holding X to use debug mode. Hang from the machine and press LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT, UP, UP, UP. Select Mushroom Hill Zone until you reach the ratchet machine. Sound Test will appear under the main menu. While swinging press LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT, UP, UP, UP. On Angel Island jump on the swinging vine near the bonus stage.
